Sarah Marshall
Media Critic and Podcaster
Sarah Marshall is a writer, podcaster, and media critic focused on setting straight our collective memory—or at least getting to the bottom of why we believe and in turn define ourselves by popular narrative and myth. Why is the maligned woman a staple of our news media? Why do we believe that serial killers are brilliant? How do we keep stumbling into all these moral panics? These are some of the questions that propel Sarah forward. She is the co-host of the popular modern history podcast You’re Wrong About, which has been highlighted in the New Yorker, The Guardian and Time Magazine. Website • Twitter
Demi Adejuyigbe
Humor Writer and Podcaster
You could set your calendar by writer, comedian, and social media personality, Demi Adejuyigbe... as long as it’s September and also the 21st. Co-host of the podcast Gilmore Guys, and writer for The Good Place, The Late Late Show with James Corden, and The Amber Ruffin Show, Adejuyigbe is perhaps best known for his annual ode to Earth, Wind & Fire’s eternal classic, “September”. More than a fun gag, Adejuyigbe has translated the immense popularity of his self-produced videos into hundreds of thousands of donations for nonprofits. While 2021 may mark the final installment of the September 21st videos, Adejuyigbe’s charm and comedic wit will remain in ample supply—no matter what day it is. Website • Twitter

Luke Burbank Hey there, welcome to Live Wire. I'm your host, Luke Burbank. Okay, this week we are dropping a little podcast extra for the summer. Didn't want to leave you hanging, even though the temperatures are warm outside and maybe you're lounging by a lake somewhere. We still got to bring you that live wire entertaining content. So here's what we're doing this week. Back in December, we did a live show in Portland at Revolution Hall, and it was a wild night. We had like so many interesting guests and we couldn't even fit everything that happened on that week's show into the radio episode. So here's what was going on. We had Paul F. Tompkins there, Sarah Marshall from the hit podcast You're Wrong About, and also Demi Adejuyigbe who is a writer and creates all kinds of great content on the web. They also, all three of these folks, have numerous podcasts between them. I think they have roughly 80 podcasts between the three of them. And so we thought it would be a fun experiment to bring them all on stage at the end of the show and play a little game about podcast reviews. They were supposed to figure out which podcast was being reviewed. Was it one of theirs with someone else's? We called This Whose podcast is it anyway? And again, it didn't make it into the radio broadcast versions. We just had so much stuff that week, but we just couldn't leave it on the editing room floor. We thought it was too weird and fun. So we are going to share it with you right now. Take a listen to this. It's Paul F Tompkins, Sarah Marshall, Demi Adejuyigbe, and me and Elena on stage at Rev Hall.
Luke Burbank So here's what we're going to do. We're going to play a little game here. First of all, I want to set this up for you. Paul, Sarah, and Demi, you know this, that the podcaster's sacred oath that we took.
Paul F. Tompkins Yes.
Sarah Marshall Yeah
Luke Burbank Before someone handed us a snowball microphone in like 2011. Was to always beg the listeners repeatedly during every episode to like and review our shows on iTunes.
Paul F. Tompkins Correct.
Luke Burbank This is a very it's the lifeblood of the body podcast. It's the only way that anyone podcast really shoots through the rankings. We were wondering, though, how much attention you all actually pay to those reviews that you're so often asking people to leave. So we have actual iTunes reviews of your podcasts. We're going to read them. And your job is to try to guess whose podcast the review is actually for. We bought these fish this we're able to get it. Fred Meyer about 40 minutes ago. You're supposed to tie them on your line if you're fishing and they tell you if you have a fish.
Paul F. Tompkins Yeah if you're a fisherman in a cartoon from the 1930s, you got to have one of these.
Luke Burbank Yeah. So I'm going to read a review and. And then your job is going to be whoever thinks they know. If it's Demi, from one of your podcasts, Sarah from one of your podcasts, or Paul from yours, whoever thinks they know ring. Whoever rings first can take a guess.
Paul F. Tompkins Oh so if we think it's from our own podcast.
Luke Burbank Well, you can also guess it's Demi's. Maybe you have a hunch. Sure. Here's the thing, though. We wouldn't bring you out here and have you do this, you know, for nothing. There is a huge prize on the line. This audience here at Rev Hall, when they came in, they signed a form legally obligating themselves to go on to iTunes and to like and review with five stars whichever podcast wins. You guys got those forms right?
Luke Burbank Did you not do the forms? We may have not done the forms, but you're good for it, right? Can you commit to me that whoever wins, you will go to their podcast and you will rate like subscribe and give it a five star rating? Can you promise me that Portland? Okay.
Audience [Cheers]
Demi Adejuyigbe If I don't do my podcast anymore? Can I make everyone review someone else's blog?
Luke Burbank Absolutely. Do you want to decide that now?
Demi Adejuyigbe Joe Rogan.
Luke Burbank All right. We have a name for this game, too. Whose podcast is it, anyway?
Live Wire House Band Whose podcast? Whose whose, whose whose? I really want to know whose podcast? Whose whose, whose whose?
Luke Burbank Yes. Yes. Live Wire house band.
Luke Burbank I almost forgot to give the name of the game, and the band spent all week rehearsing that song. All right, here we go. I'm going to read an actual iTunes review of a podcast. It's for a podcast that one of you have done at some point.
Paul F. Tompkins At some point? At some point? One of you have done this at some point.
Luke Burbank Here we go. I feel like the hosts are insufferable to their friends. And now they've made me insufferable to my friends. I love them. Sarah.
Sarah Marshall That's mine.
Luke Burbank That is, that is Sarah's.
Sarah Marshall That's a frequent comment.
Luke Burbank Did you Sarah, did you read that? You know, have you seen that, you know, on iTunes? Or is it just sound like something someone would say about your podcast?
Sarah Marshall Seen it on Twitter? I've seen some version of that at least 20 times where people are like, no, I won't shut up about my pet interest, too.
Luke Burbank Well, it got you a point. Here's the next one. I'm a scientist and I listen to this while doing lab work and I snort, laughed and messed up my samples. Five stars. Paul.
Paul F. Tompkins I bet that's mine.
Luke Burbank It's actually Demi's. It's punch up the jam.
Demi Adejuyigbe Ayeee!
Paul F. Tompkins Well, what happens to me now?
Luke Burbank I don't know.
Demi Adejuyigbe You get dropped through a hole in the floor.
Luke Burbank Have you seen the clips of that dating game where that actually happens?
Demi Adejuyigbe Yes! I love it. I want to do it so bad.
Luke Burbank I know.
Paul F. Tompkins I want to do it, too. That's my first response when I see it. Yeah, because I want to drop through a hole.
Demi Adejuyigbe Yeah. I imagine this little slide there. I'm like weeeee!
Luke Burbank We had not gamed through what would happen if someone rang their fish bell and then got it wrong. So there's demi. Get the point.
Elena Passarello I think we give a point to Demi.
Demi Adejuyigbe Yay!
Paul F. Tompkins It makes sense.
Luke Burbank Ever closer to Joe Rogan getting more reviews.
Demi Adejuyigbe For you, Daddy.
Luke Burbank All right.
Paul F. Tompkins He's our daddy.
Luke Burbank Here's another one. Why does the guy sound like Neil from Family Guy? Four stars.
Sarah Marshall Who's Neil?
Paul F. Tompkins I don't know.
Luke Burbank Does anyone know who is Neil from? Family Guy?
Paul F. Tompkins Paul, I guess me.
Luke Burbank This one is also Sarah. Sarah's point to Sarah.
Sarah Marshall I don't even know if that's insulting or not, it probably is.
Luke Burbank I don't either. I've never even heard of the character Neil from family guy.
Sarah Marshall That shows has been on for too long. Who's Neil?
Paul F. Tompkins Here's what we know. Peter Griffin.
Luke Burbank Right.
Paul F. Tompkins Stewey?
Luke Burbank Lois.
Sarah Marshall The dog.
Paul F. Tompkins Yeah the dog. Yeah.
Luke Burbank Brian.
Paul F. Tompkins Yes, Brian.
Luke Burbank That's it?
Collectively Yes. Yeah. All right.
Luke Burbank I like the filling, but not the crust. If you can get past the smug, smarmy and self-congratulatory tone of the show. They actually feature some pretty talented and interesting guests.
Paul F. Tompkins I've burned twice before.
Luke Burbank Don't let your fear, Demi.
Demi Adejuyigbe Is that Paul?
Luke Burbank It's actually Live Wire.
Collectively Oh come on!
Luke Burbank So we. We get a point. We're also playing for the record. There's an actual review left of Live Wire.
Demi Adejuyigbe Incredible.
Luke Burbank I asked. I asked our executive producer Laura Hadden to look through some of the reviews. And she just texted back after a few months. It was the three dots were going for a while. And she said, this is a real emotional journey. Oh, just reading the Live Wire reviews. Okay. Someone said it's like listening to the Bible without the preachiness. P.S. Can I leave a suggestion here, Paul? Yes.
Paul F. Tompkins That was me.
Luke Burbank That was you! Spontaneous nation.
Paul F. Tompkins What a strange review. Yeah.
Sarah Marshall Because you're just listing plagues, but you're like, it's not anyone's fault though, really.
Paul F. Tompkins Exactly. Listing things that happened I'm not saying there's a problem.
Luke Burbank It's. It's not so. It's like the part where there's about an entire chapter. It's just ham begot Japheth and Japheth begot. It's just a list. It's kind of like 23 and Me
Paul F. Tompkins Yeah
Luke Burbank Of their time, that part wasn't preachy. Elena, what's the score, by the way?
Elena Passarello I'm not sure!
Luke Burbank Okay. Here's another one. Pretty sure I lived on the same floor as the host of this show in college. Glad a fellow alum is doing so well. Demi.
Demi Adejuyigbe I think this is me.
Luke Burbank It is you.
Demi Adejuyigbe I was like this sounds familiar.
Luke Burbank Do you know who that person is?
Demi Adejuyigbe I don't think so. Which scares me because I'm like, What did you see me doing in that dorm?
Paul F. Tompkins What did you do in that dorm?
Demi Adejuyigbe Oh, nothing.
Paul F. Tompkins College things.
Demi Adejuyigbe I was studying a lot, listening to a lot of Joe Rogan and planning my future.
Luke Burbank Uh last one, do we have any idea what the score is? Elena, can you make one up?
Elena Passarello It's tied between Sarah and Demi.
Demi Adejuyigbe Okay.
Paul F. Tompkins I have one don't I? Right?
Luke Burbank Yeah, Paul has one. All right. I love this show. I like to play it loud so my neighbors think I have friends.
Paul F. Tompkins Paul I'm going to say that's mine because I have the most people on.
Luke Burbank That's you. It's Stay F. Homekins.
Paul F. Tompkins Oh, thought they were narrowing it down to one podcast.
Luke Burbank Elena, what is the final score?
Elena Passarello Sarah has two points. Demi has two points. And Paul has two points.
Luke Burbank All right, you like and review and subscribe to all. What a Solomonic ending. Paul F. Tompkins. Sarah Marshall, Demi Adejuyigbe everybody.
Live Wire House Band Whose podcast? Whose whose, whose whose? I really want to know. Whose podcast? Whose whose, whose whose?
Demi Adejuyigbe Okay. If that didn't make your summer, I don't know what will because that was that was comedy gold. My friends Paul F Tompkins, Sarah Marshall, and Demi Adejuyigbe on stage at Rev Hall as part of this month's Live Wire podcast offering. Make sure you do check out their actual podcast. Okay. I said 80 before. That might have been a little high, but they do have a lot of podcasts. Demi is on punch up the jam Sara is on you're wrong about and Paul hosts co-hosts I should say the Stay F. Homekins podcast. So go check all of those out. And don't forget to catch new episodes of Live Wire starting September 16th. We will be back. We'll be rested, refreshded and ready. I don't think refreshded is a word, so we'll see you on September 16th. In the meantime, enjoy the rest of your summer and we'll see you soon.
